Choose Illinois or Kentucky before searching

McLean County criminal records in this guide cover two distinct jurisdictions: McLean County, Illinois and McLean County, Kentucky. For Illinois, the Circuit Clerk’s Criminal/Traffic Public Access system is the starting index. For Kentucky, the Office of Circuit Court Clerk in Calhoun handles the county’s court-record requests. Keep the state and court on every saved result. A case or no-result response from one county says nothing about the other.

Decide whether you need a particular filing, an official summary/disposition search, or a broader statewide report. A court portal concerns court proceedings, not all police investigations or present custody. A charge list is not necessarily a conviction list. If proof of an outcome is required, request the named judgment or disposition and specify certification rather than submitting a screenshot as the complete record.

Understand the Illinois alias warning

The Illinois portal supports name, case-number and birth-date searches. Its name fields ask for the last name and first name or first initial, without a middle name or initial. A displayed name can change because the searched name is recorded as an alias and the system returns the primary name. The clerk warns that confirming the identity may require a written inquiry or an office visit.

Keep both the name you entered and the primary name displayed, together with the case number. Do not silently replace one with the other or assume a shared alias proves that a record belongs to the person you meant. Ask the clerk to confirm the connection, using available identifying details. The portal’s *C notation after a case number denotes referral to collections; it is not a new criminal charge or a conviction code.

Account for missing years and delayed updates

McLean Illinois says full years of criminal and traffic data are available from 1991 onward. For earlier years, it offers prepaid written searches at $6 per year per person, or on-site research in manual books. Its web information is a public service rather than the official court record and is not drawn from the real-time system. Recent activity may therefore be absent when you search.

If a name and case number appear with no information available, submit a written inquiry containing both. Distinguish an old file, a delayed update and a restricted record before concluding there is no case. The Circuit Clerk notes that court records follow judicial access rules rather than the ordinary Illinois FOIA route. Start with the clerk’s case-record process, not a general county administrative-record request.

Order an official Illinois record check

For written official summary/disposition information, request a record check. The fee is $6 per year per person within each division, Criminal or Traffic. Thus, one person across two years in Criminal costs $12; searching the same years in both divisions would be $24. Send a check or money order payable to McLean County Circuit Clerk with the request. This is a search charge, separate from ordering copies of a known file.

Include the full name, aliases or maiden names, birth date, division, years, your daytime contact and a return mailing address or fax number. Mail it to McLean County Circuit Clerk, Attn: Record Check, P.O. Box 2400, Bloomington, IL 61702-2400. The clerk usually completes searches within ten business days unless storage retrieval is necessary; results are not given by telephone. Preserve the requested year range with the result so it is not described as an unlimited lifetime search.

Copy the actual Illinois case document

The Criminal Division FAQ permits public file inspection and copies except for impounded, suppressed or sealed files. With a known case number, ask for the exact filing and remit the quoted copy fee. It lists $2 for the first page, $0.50 for the next tier of pages and $0.25 thereafter, plus $6 for certification. Because the FAQ’s wording of the 19-page threshold is awkward, have the clerk calculate a multipage total before payment rather than guessing where that tier ends.

For an apparent wrong-person or outcome error, bring the exact portal entry and the relevant court paper to the clerk’s attention. Ask whether the issue is an alias association, a display delay or a court-file correction. A new certified copy authenticates the existing file; it does not automatically seal it, expunge it or correct a disputed entry. The clerk’s FAQ links the separate expungement and sealing information if that is the actual task.

Use the Kentucky clerk for the Kentucky case

McLean County, Kentucky’s Circuit Court Clerk is at the Courthouse Annex, 210 East Main Street, P.O. Box 145, Calhoun, KY 42327. Call 270-273-3966 or 270-273-5055. The county directory identifies that clerk as the starting point for Circuit, Family and District case copies. Give the case type, parties, case number and approximate year, and ask about authorized access, certification, current price and delivery. The directory does not establish a universal copy fee or guaranteed processing time.

For an older Kentucky file, ask the clerk whether it has transferred to a records facility and obtain the locator information before contacting the archive. If the requirement is a Kentucky statewide court-history report rather than one McLean document, use AOC’s background-check route. AOC’s RU-004 form lists $25 per report; its public report excludes confidential categories and federal cases. An inaccurate AOC result can be raised with its Records Unit at 800-928-6381, while the underlying county document remains a clerk matter.
